Bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder is one of the more serious mental illnesses which appears to be caused by metabolic changes in the body and possibly heredity. Although bipolar disorder is often though of as a condition causing drastic changes in mood and periods which swing unpredictably between "manic" with high energy to low energy periods of sadness and hopelessness, bipolar disorder can also currently only have manic or depressive symptoms. Manic syndrome may cause hyperactivity, fast speech, unlimited energy, easy distractibility, decreased need for sleep and involvement in activities such as excessive spending that under normal circumstances an individual would not partake in. Bipolar disorder can include episodes of excessive anger. Bipolar disorder can affect job or school performance and frequently begins in adolescence or young adulthood. It also tends to run in families and may be hereditary.

Social Security will determine disability based not only upon a diagnosis and the symptoms that an individual has but will also evaluate how the condition impacts on daily living and functioning.

In order to prove your disability to Social Security, you need to either document that your condition or conditions meet or equal in severity the criteria found in the Social Security Commissioner's regulations or, if you are an adult, that your condition and symptoms are so severe that you are unable to work. If you are a child under 18, you must similarly show that your condition or conditions meet or equal in severity the criteria in the Social Security Commissioner's regulations or that your condition or conditions functionally equals the Commissioner's regulations.
