Children who are much smaller or larger than their peers may have a growth disorder caused by a pituitary gland issue. The pituitary gland produces growth hormones and, on occasion produces too much or too little of a hormone causing a stunting or an overstimulation of growth. Possible treatments include hormone therapy, other medicines and, in some cases, surgery or radiation therapy. There are over 300 types of dwarfism which may involve congenital issues also impacting other organs, physical problems, learning and/or mental involvement. There are other congenital disorders, illnesses or diseases which can impact on growth such as cystic fibrosis, Turner syndrome, Crohn's disease, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, and disorders of the musculoskeletal system or trauma or problems with the growth plates.
Musculoskeletal disorders include a wide range of disorders which may result from hereditary congenital, or acquired pathologic processes. Impairments may result from infectious, inflammatory, or degenerative processes, traumatic or developmental events, or neoplastic, vascular, or toxic/metabolic diseases.
