Lyme disease is a bacterial infection introduced into the body via tick bite. Other vector-borne diseases include: human granulocytic and monocytic ehrlichiosis, babesiosis and Bartonella Henselae. Symptoms often mimic those of other illnesses and include flu-like symptoms such as fever, rash (often called a "bull's eye" rash), muscle pain, headache, stiff neck and joint swelling. Lyme disease and other vector-borne diseases will show up on specialized lab tests such as the Western Blot. Prognosis is much better if Lyme disease is caught early and treated with antibiotics. If not treated, or not controlled with antibiotics, Lyme disease and other vector-borne diseases can have debilitating effects including trouble concentrating, memory loss, muscle weakness, emotional difficulties and even possible nervous system problems.
