Peripheral nerves are those not contained in the brain or spinal cord. Peripheral neuropathy involves damage to these nerves and disrupts communication with the brain and the rest of the body. It can be caused by injury, systemic diseases (such as kidney disease or hormone imbalances, alcoholism, blood diseases or connective tissue disorders). Disorders involving these nerves include diabetes mellitus, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet or complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Treatment mainly involves reducing pain from symptoms such as: numbness, burning or tingling, muscle weakness, sensitivity to touch. In the most severe cases, patients may experience difficulty breathing and may have muscle wasting, paralysis and organ failure. Treatment depends on the underlying cause.
Social Security will review how the disorder or disease affects the individual's ability to use the arms and legs, or move about. Social Security will also review how these conditions impact the individual's day-to-day functioning.
In order to prove your disability to Social Security, you need to either document that your condition or conditions meet or equal in severity the criteria found in the Social Security Commissioner's regulations or, if you are an adult, that your condition and symptoms are so severe that you are unable to work. If you are a child under 18, you must similarly show that your condition or conditions meet or equal in severity the criteria in the Social Security Commissioner's regulations or that your condition or conditions functionally equals the Commissioner's regulations.
