Skin disease

Skin disorders are any abnormal conditions of the external skin caused by heredity, congenital problems, illness or disease. The Social Security regulations list skin conditions from the following categories: ichthyosis, bullous diseases, chronic infections of the skin or mucous membranes, dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, genetic photosensitivity disorders, and burns. Skin disorders, diseases and conditions can be documented by blood work, tests, biopsies, and evaluation by specialists such as dermatologists. Skin conditions may be found disabling when they interfere with the movement of joints, such as the connective tissue diseases. Others may interfere with the use of both hands, such as contact dermatitis, skin lesions on the feet, or diabetic skin ulcerations which may interfere with the ability to walk. Or other skin conditions which cause severe rashes or discharge and may make it difficult to wear clothes or put on shoes may also be considered disabling. The symptoms secondary to skin conditions such as pain, itching and burning, may also interfere with the ability to work. Skin conditions may be related to other conditions, diseases, or disorders involving multiple body systems. There are hundreds of skin conditions. Some skin conditions may cause disfigurement or deformity affecting sight, hearing, speech or the ability to chew and may be evaluated as an impairment of the special senses. Still other skin or facial disfigurements may also cause emotional disabilities.

In order to prove your disability to Social Security, you need to either document that your condition or conditions meet or equal in severity the criteria found in the Social Security Commissioner's regulations or, if you are an adult, that your condition and symptoms are so severe that you are unable to work. If you are a child under 18, you must similarly show that your condition or conditions meet or equal in severity the criteria in the Social Security Commissioner's regulations or that your condition or conditions functionally equals the Commissioner's regulations.
