In Order To Obtain Social Security Disability, Must An Impairment Be "Permanent"?
The answer is yes and no. In order for a medical or psychiatric impairment or disability to qualify as "disability" under the Social Security Act, as amended, the impairment must last or be expected to last for at least twelve or more months. There may also be Social Security disability benefits paid for a "closed period" of disability so long as the individual has not worked for a minimum of twelve months but, subsequently returns to work.
