Essex County Lawyer Handling SSD For Spouses

The widow or widower of someone who worked long enough is referred to as a "survivor" or "surviving spouse."

If you are a surviving spouse, you may be eligible for SSDI benefits in one of two ways:

  • You are eligible for reduced survivor benefits as early as age 60. Full benefits require waiting until an age determined by the Social Security Administration (SSA); this is between 65 and 67 years old, depending on your year of birth.
  • You are eligible for survivor benefits at age 50 if you are disabled, and if your disability began within seven years of your spouse's death.

If you are a disabled worker, your spouse will be eligible to receive SSDI benefits to care for your child until he or she reaches age 16.
