This reader, in reviewing several newspaper and magazine articles found several suggestions, primarily from politicians, about how to correct and replenish the Social Security Trust Funds. This reader neither endorses nor rejects these options by would like to list some of the suggestions:
- Increase taxes
- Increase taxes for the rich
- Raise the retirement age
- Slow the rate of benefit inflation to wealthier Americans
- Reduce Medicare benefits
- Modify Medicare benefits
- Privatize or partially privatize Social Security
The CEO of AARP, Barry Rand is requesting that individuals contact their U.S. Congressmen and Senators and provide recommendations on how it is suggested that the Social Security System is fixed. Mr. Rand also invited AARP members to fill out a questionnaire which was attached to the March 2012 bulletin.
