What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Often referred to as “palsy”, Parkinson’s disease causes trouble with muscle control and movement. Nerve cells in Parkinson’s sufferers do not work properly and do not send signals to coordinate movement in the muscles. Symptoms include:

  • Trembling
  • Stiffness of limbs
  • Slow movement
  • Poor coordination and balance

The disease is progressive and patients have greater and greater difficulty with simple tasks, including walking, talking, chewing, swallowing or speaking. At the advanced stages, Parkinson’s may also affect cognitive and mental functioning.

Parkinson’s onset typically occurs around age 60 and is more common in men than in women. However, Parkinson’s disease may strike younger individuals as well. There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease. However, there are many medications on the market that help to control the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

How Do I Get Social Security Disability Benefits?

The Social Security Administration will evaluate how the condition affects movement in the arms or legs but will also review how the condition and secondary symptoms impact an individual’s ability to function on a day-to-day basis.

You can prove your disability to the Social Security Administration in one of two ways. First, you can document that your condition or conditions meet or equal in severity the criteria found in the Social Security Commissioner’s regulations. Second, if you are an adult, we can show that your condition and symptoms are so severe that you are unable to work. If you are a child under 18, you must similarly show that your condition or conditions meet or equal in severity the criteria in the Social Security Commissioner’s regulations or that your condition is functionally equal to the Commissioner’s regulations.
